In order to detect such small and rare signals, it is of critical importance to reduce the background signals as much as possible. The rate with which a signal is detected at a certain energy is usually defined in <strong>differntial rate units<\/strong> (d.r.u.) which represents the counts per day in each energy bin of 1keV width read out by the detector per each kg of its mass. BULLKID-DM aims to operate at a rate of 10<sup>-2<\/sup> d.r.u. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"592\" height=\"615\" src=\"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/BULLKID-DM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/immagine-10.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/BULLKID-DM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/immagine-10.png 592w, https:\/\/web.infn.it\/BULLKID-DM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/immagine-10-289x300.png 289w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 592px) 100vw, 592px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Schematic of the simulations aimed at the computation of the backgrounds and the optimisation of the shields<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>In order to achieve such low backgrounds, the experiment is carried out in the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/BULLKID-DM\/cryoplatform-lngs\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"159\">cryogenic lab<\/a> in the Hall-B of the Gran Sasso National Laboratories, in a gallery carved under over 1km of solid rock. This reduces the rate of cosmic rays by over 100 times. Unfortunately, further background mitigation strategies are necessary. A simulation team is currently working at the optimisation of <a href=\"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/BULLKID-DM\/particle-shield\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"588\">two shields<\/a>: a lead one that encompasses the cryostat and a smaller one made of copper, some of which of highest purity, that shields the experiment and that is kept at a temperature of 10 mK. An anti-coincidence <a href=\"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/BULLKID-DM\/bullkid-veto\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"595\">cryogenic veto<\/a> detectors is also being developed in order to further suppress the backgrounds. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The interaction of Dark Matter particles with ordinary matter is extremely rare and produces signal of faint intensity.
