SUMMARY:WG2 monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Gonzalo Herrera (MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space\nResearch\, USA) will give a seminar entitled: \n“Quantum Gravity and New Physics with Cosmic Messengers”. \nAbstract: \n“Multi-messenger observations of the high-energy sky allow us to test\nfundamental physics at energies\, densities\, and propagation baselines\ninaccessible to terrestrial experiments. Here I will discuss several\nrecent examples in which these extreme astrophysical conditions provide\nnovel probes of new interactions and quantum-gravity-motivated\nphenomena.\nI will first show how the scattering of high-energy cosmic rays with\nsupernova neutrinos can probe the neutrino–nucleon cross section at\ncenter-of-mass energies that have not been directly measured. I will\nthen discuss how active galactic nuclei can act as natural high-energy\ncolliders\, enabling constraints on proton–proton and proton–photon\ninteractions at otherwise untested center-of-mass energies. These same\nenvironments can also provide sensitivity to low-scale quantum gravity\,\nthrough processes such as graviton emission and microscopic black-hole\nproduction\, with observable consequences in high-energy neutrino data.\nFinally\, I will turn to propagation effects and discuss how the enormous\nbaselines traveled by astrophysical neutrinos can provide sensitivity to\npossible departures from standard quantum coherence. Together\, these\nexamples illustrate the complementary ways in which cosmic messengers\ncan probe fundamental physics at extreme energies and over extreme\ndistances.” \nZoom link will be sent by email.
