{"id":3339,"date":"2022-08-31T11:41:18","date_gmt":"2022-08-31T09:41:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/EURO-LABS\/?page_id=3339"},"modified":"2022-10-03T16:57:34","modified_gmt":"2022-10-03T14:57:34","slug":"uob-ta","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/EURO-LABS\/uob-ta\/","title":{"rendered":"UoB\u00a0TA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"page-title\">UoB<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/EURO-LABS\/eligibility-criteria\/\">How to Apply<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"#UoB-Contact\">Contact<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Birmingham MC40 Proton\/Light Ion Cyclotron<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aida2020.web.cern.ch\/aida2020\/sites\/test-static-02.web.cern.ch\/files\/pictures%20TA%20documents\/UoB%20small.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The high intensity irradiation line at the Birmingham MC40 cyclotron provides a beam of 27 MeV protons (40 MeV at extraction), with beam current ranging from around 100 nA up to 2 \u03bcA. Samples are scanned across the incident beam (beam spot 10 x 10 mm<sup class=\"\">2<\/sup>) to obtain uniform irradiation, while being kept at -27C (temperature down to -40C possible) and at a relative humidity below 10%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The facility typically irradiates samples of a few cm<sup class=\"\">2<\/sup>&nbsp;to doses expected at the LHC and upgrades (few 1&#215;10<sup class=\"\">15<\/sup>&nbsp;1Mev n<sub class=\"\">eq<\/sub>\/cm<sup class=\"\">2<\/sup>) within one day of irradiation. An upgrade is planned to provide fluence in excess of 1&#215;10<sup class=\"\">16<\/sup>&nbsp;1Mev n<sub class=\"\">eq<\/sub>\/cm<sup class=\"\">2<\/sup>&nbsp;to match the needs of detector R&amp;D for future facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Access to the facility is remote. Samples for irradiation should be shipped to Birmingham mounted on an aluminium frame, with specifications to be obtained by the irradiation team. Samples are irradiated by Birmingham technical staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fluence delivered is determined by nickel foils, irradiated together with the sample, and subsequently measuring the foil activity by gamma-ray spectroscopy using an in-house HpGe detector.
