This can be achieved by measuring with unprecedented precision the shape of the differential cross section of \u03bc-e elastic scattering, using the intense muon beam available at CERN, with energy of 160 GeV, off atomic electrons of a light target, as described in the <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1140%2Fepjc%2Fs10052-017-4633-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">original publication<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The muon anomalous magnetic moment is one of the most precisely measured quantities as well as one the most precisely calculable in the Standard Model, that\u2019s why it constitutes a stringent test of the theory. For the last twenty years the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1103\/PhysRevD.73.072003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BNL measurement<\/a> has been pointing to a significant discrepancy from the theory prediction. In 2021 the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1103\/PhysRevLett.126.141801\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first result from the FNAL g-2 experiment<\/a> confirmed the previous measurement, bringing to 4.2\u03c3 the deviation from the SM prediction contained in the<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.physrep.2020.07.006\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.physrep.2020.07.006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> 2020 theory white paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"645\" src=\"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/g-2_FNAL-1024x645.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-98\" style=\"width:484px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/g-2_FNAL-1024x645.png 1024w, https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/g-2_FNAL-300x189.png 300w, https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/g-2_FNAL-768x484.png 768w, https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/g-2_FNAL-1536x967.png 1536w, https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/g-2_FNAL-1568x987.png 1568w, https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/g-2_FNAL.png 1766w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>There have been hypotheses trying to explain this deviation as a quantum effect of new exotic particles, however it is still possible that it result from a systematic error in the theoretical calculation. The dominant theory uncertainty is related to the hadronic contribution to the vacuum polarization, which is not calculable in perturbation theory. Its leading order contribution (LO-HVP) is usually determined by a data-driven dispersive approach, using the measurements of low-energy hadron production cross section in e<sup>+<\/sup>e<sup>&#8211;<\/sup> annihilation. In contrast with this method, a <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41586-021-03418-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lattice QCD calculation of the LO-HVP contribution<\/a>, found a reduced discrepancy with the measurement, in tension with the data-driven estimate. <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2506.03069\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2506.03069\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The final measurement of the FNAL g-2 collaboration<\/a> with full statistics confirmed the previous ones with a four-fold error reduction with respect to the BNL measurement. In the future an independent measurement will be pursued by the experiment at J-PARC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2407.10913\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2407.10913\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">update of the lattice QCD calculation <\/a>with improved precision confirmed a small deviation of 0.9\u03c3 from the measurement. The <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2505.21476\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2505.21476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">updated theory white paper<\/a> has incorporated the new lattice result, but the picture is still to be clarified, given the discrepancies with the existing data-driven estimates and considering that the theory error is much larger than the experimental one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"602\" src=\"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/summary_plot_data_hvp_bis-1024x602.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/summary_plot_data_hvp_bis-1024x602.png 1024w, https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/summary_plot_data_hvp_bis-300x176.png 300w, https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/summary_plot_data_hvp_bis-768x451.png 768w, https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/summary_plot_data_hvp_bis-1536x903.png 1536w, https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/summary_plot_data_hvp_bis-2048x1203.png 2048w, https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/summary_plot_data_hvp_bis-1568x921.png 1568w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>MUonE project<\/strong> was conceived during the workshop <em>\u201cPhysics Beyond Colliders\u201d<\/em>, held at CERN in late 2016, and the proposal was published in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1140%2Fepjc%2Fs10052-017-4633-z\" target=\"_blank\"><em>European Physical Journal C<\/em><\/a> soon after. The proposed apparatus is a sequence of detection stations, each one made of a passive element serving as target and active planes made of silicon microstrip detectors for tracking, with length of 1 meter and transverse dimensions of about 10 cm. In 2017 a first beam test was devoted to the study of multiple scattering on the material, which affects the observable angles of the measured tracks. Its results have been published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/1748-0221\/15\/01\/P01017\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/1748-0221\/15\/01\/P01017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Journal of Instrumentation<\/em><\/a>. In 2018 a second test was carried out aimed to study the selection of elastic events and is also published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/1748-0221\/16\/06\/P06005\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/1748-0221\/16\/06\/P06005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Journal of Instrumentation<\/a><\/em>. In June 2019 the MUonE project was submitted for approval to the CERN SPS Committee with the&nbsp;<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/cds.cern.ch\/record\/2677471\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Letter-of-Intent<\/a><\/em>. The basic unit chosen for the detector is the module developed by the CMS collaboration for the <a href=\"https:\/\/cds.cern.ch\/record\/2272264\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/cds.cern.ch\/record\/2272264\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">upgrade of their Outer Tracker<\/a>. These sensors, together with their trigger and readout electronics, are found to have adequate specifics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"470\" src=\"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/MUonE_station_cad-1-1024x470.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/MUonE_station_cad-1-1024x470.png 1024w, https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/MUonE_station_cad-1-300x138.png 300w, https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/MUonE_station_cad-1-768x352.png 768w, https:\/\/web.infn.it\/MUonE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/MUonE_station_cad-1.png 1356w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>CERN approved a first Test Run, which was carried out with a couple of tracking stations and a prototype calorimeter in August-September 2023. Continuous readout at 40 MHz was achieved for long runs, recording 350 TB of raw data, providing about 10<sup>8<\/sup> candidate elastic scattering events. The final test of a scaled version of the complete apparatus has been carried out in Summer 2025, with a setup comprising of three tracking stations, electromagnetic calorimeter, muon detector, timing detector and the beam momentum spectrometer, as described in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cds.cern.ch\/record\/2896293\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/cds.cern.ch\/record\/2896293\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Phase-1 Proposal<\/em><\/a>. For this run, data from all the components were integrated in a newly designed DAQ, with an online selection based on hit patterns in the tracking stations, reducing the rate of recorded events to few hundred KHz.
