The answers to these questions can be addressed by investigating permanent and oscillating Electric Dipole Moments (EDM) of fundamental particles. The experiments can be performed with polarized beams in a storage rings. Important milestones have been achieved by the JEDI Collaboration, using the magnetic storage ring COSY at Forschungszentrum Juelich (Germany).<\/p><p>The next phase of the development requires the design of dedicated Prototype Storage Ring (PSR). The layout of the PSR with a beam energy of about 30-45 MeV and a circumference of around 100 m will serve as enabler for the final EDM facility facility operated at a magic energy of 233 MeV, with a circumference of about 500 m. In particular CERN is committed to respect the net-zero paradigm for future machines and has established a Sustainable Accelerators Panel to harmonise the approach to sustainability of the various studies for future accelerators. As founder of the TESLA collaboration, we actively participated in the Tesla Test Facility, contributing to the high brightness electron source with Cs2Te photocathodes, SRF cavities, cryomodule, cryomodule diagnostic and ancillaries. We then enlarged our competences to proton SRF cavities in different projects from the Italian TRASCO, the European ADS program to the design of the American SNS cavities. Thanks to all these competences, we made a further step forward and we joined European XFEL as co-leader of the 1.3 GHz cavities series production, cryomodules and tuners. In the Eu-XFEL context, we also designed, produced, installed, and commissioned a fully operational 3.9 GHz cryomodule, the first module in operation in the whole linac. The know-how on cavity design, prototyping, and testing has been then applied to the In-Kind contribution to the ESS project and, recently, to the PIP-II project where medium and low beta SRF cavities for proton have been required. Concurrently, we have continued the activities on photocathodes developing systems for the photocathode production, transport, and installation in the major high brightness user facilities worldwide. A roadmap for ion source development may consist of several steps: plasma simulation, multiphysics simulation of each system component, high-level control system, plasma characterisation, beam characterisation, data analysis and, again, plasma simulation. The cycle starts and ends with plasma simulation because it is the instrument that shows how different phenomena take part in the plasma and beam formation and because, in such a way, the accuracy grows with each cycle. Commercial multiphysics simulation tools are essential for adequately designing all ion source equipment: magnets, intense electrostatic field regions, microwave propagation and coupling, thermal dissipation and vacuum. The dependence of source performances from source parameters (magnetic field profile, gas pressure, microwave power) has been widely investigated using a high-level control system* able to test tens of thousands of source configurations without human interaction. This kind of characterisation allowed us to identify a new magnetic configuration, High Stability Microwave Discharge Ion Sources**, that produces a beam with high stability, intensity and brilliance. The plasma simulation tool we developed discloses the role of two types of electrostatic waves in plasma formation and their correlation to stability. The simulation provides a complete view of ions and electrons energy and density distributions, the formation of the plasma meniscus and the beam extraction. Exploiting such a property, we can study the generation of ultra-low emittance positron beams and\/or very<\/p><p>small bandwidth X\/g ray beams (the case of muon beams was discussed in a previous seminar of this series). Furthermore, we recently found a particular mode of electron-photon collisions that we named Symmetric Compton Scattering: it is characterised by a steady center of mass system and it represents exactly the divide between Inverse Compton Scattering and Direct Compton effect (that one discovered by A. Compton in 1923 and explained by him invoking the quantum nature of light, i.e. the existence of photons). SCS is the only electron-photon collision characterised by a vanishing correlation between the energy of the scattered photons and their scattering angle: such a property, when SCS occurs at large recoils, transfers mono-chromaticity from the incident electron beam to the scattered photon beam, opening the way to the generation of mono-chromatic gamma-ray beams using moderate energy electron beams colliding with large bandwidth X-ray beams (like those generated via bremsstrahlung), representing a compact, laser-less, more sustainable alternative to present ICS sources for nuclear photonics and photo-nuclear physics. When we talk about cultural heritage studies we are not only talking about artworks such as paintings and sculptures but everything that concerns the study of our history, such as objects of anthropological interest. The diversity behind the characteristics of the materials to be studied (bones, organic pigments, metals) is so vast that different analytical techniques are applied in order to answer all the questions performed by historians, restorers, archaeologists, geologists, and all the other professionals involved in the CH field. In this framework, taking into account the historical value of the CH samples, accelerators based techniques are fundamental because they allow high performance, non-invasive and non-destructive analysis, or even when necessary, just a small amount of material is needed. Moreover, the accelerator based techniques offer a complete set of diagnostic analysis which cover the majority of the case studies found in CH. For this reason, a brief summary of the facilities and their techniques used for social heritage studies will be presented, starting from the big ones which perform neutron or muon radiography, passing through light sources and small accelerators. In addition, in the last years the demand for transportable instrumentation in the CH field has grown, which opened a new field of technological research: transportable accelerators. Three Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) machines and equipment for post-production are available at DIAM, to allow the production and the analysis of additively manufactured materials such as copper, copper alloys, aluminium alloys, titanium alloys, Inconel 718, stainless steel, and refractory metals (Ta, Nb, W, Mo), which are particularly suitable for Nuclear Fusion and Particle Accelerator communities. DIAM participates in several international projects, implementing the AM in advanced fields such as nuclear fusion (e.g. DTT project) and particle accelerators (e.g. SPES project). The R&amp;D programs include the development of AM powder alloys, the characterization of AM processes and produced materials, and finally, the implementation of Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) technics in order to additively produce prototypes for components testing and validation. In high brightness photo-injector facilities, for instance, the beam quality is directly related to the peak electric field on the cathode, so that the higher the field the better the beam parameters (e.g. emittance).<br \/>Moreover, the interest towards ultra-high gradient structures (&gt;50 MV\/m) as building blocks of future particle accelerators has been historically driven by CERN and SLAC, but in the last years other Laboratories showed an increasing enthusiasm for this topic. A design study for an X-band driven FEL source (Compact Light), and the Eupraxia@SPARC_LAB project to name a few.<\/p><p>The seminar will introduce the different kind of accelerating structures commonly used in electron linacs, defining main features, efficiency parameters, construction and design limitations. The introduction will be completed with a short state of the art of accelerating structures currently in operation in other international laboratories.<\/p><p>Then, a complete overview of the past, present and future prototyping activities on normal conducting accelerating structures at LNF will be presented. Commercial cyclotrons (E = 15-70 MeV) achieve currents up to or just above 1 mA. Both proton and H- cyclotrons are used. One of the decisive issues in the design and operation of cyclotrons is the choice of the beam extraction method. Typical methods are extraction by electrostatic deflector and by stripping.<\/p><p>The electrostatic deflector strongly limits the maximum beam intensity because of losses and induced heat-load on its septum. The latter method requires acceleration of H- beams which are sensitive for rest gas and Lorentz stripping and therefore require good vacuum and not too high magnetic field.<\/p><p>The self-extracting cyclotron is a promising tool for large-scale production of medical radioisotopes. The 14 MeV H+ machine uses an internal ion source and a magnetic field that features a sharp transition from the stable isochronous zone to the unstable fringe field, allowing spontaneous beam extraction. First harmonic coils increase the turn-separation at the entrance of the extraction path.<\/p><p>In 2000 a prototype build by the IBA company provided the proof-of-principle for self-extraction by the extraction of a proton current close to 2 mA. Recently, a simulation study has been done to improve the concept of self-extraction. Proton currents up to 5 mA are aimed for from the improved self-extracting cyclotron called InnovaTron.<\/p><p>A major variable of the beam simulations is the space charge effect in the cyclotron centre. An approach has been developed for a more accurate simulation of the beam extracted from the ion source and its acceleration in the first accelerating gaps under space charge conditions. With 40 years of experience in the development of superconducting magnets, the Genoa and Milan Sections of INFN are involved in the development of some of these magnets that, while based on established NbTi technology, have required significant development activities by our laboratories. We are talking about the MBRD dipole, which separates and recombines the beams before and after the interaction points in CMS and ATLAS, and the higher-order correctors, a family of magnets that includes quadrupoles, sextupoles, octupoles, decapoles and dodecapoles. The application of some key inventions as well as the general advance of the technologies (mechanics, RF, vacuum, materials) have continuously improved the DTL performances along the decades. INFN is now committed to complete the construction, installation and commissioning of Drift Tube Linac for the European Spallation Source. An overview of the activities for this project will be given in the seminar. As a consequence of the in-depth study of the DTL principles, some ideas for new applications has been developed. In a bent crystal, the channeled particles follow the bend. This makes a basis for an elegant technique of beam steering by means of bent crystals. Elective application of this technique in high-energy hadron beam is collimation. In particular, future upgrades of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) demand improved cleaning performance of its collimation system and the possibility to use a crystal-based collimation system represents an option for improving both cleaning performance and impedance compared to traditional approaches. In addition, bent crystals have been tested for the slow extraction of the multi-GeV Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) beam and could be exploited to extract the LHC or the Future Circular Collider (FCC) hadron beams in order to realize multi-TeV fixed target experiments and beamlines. Crystal-based beam extraction can be applied also to electron and positron beams as recently proposed at DESY and DAFNE. This technique will allow supplying of fixed-target experiments with intense high-quality monoenergetic beams, e.g., PADME at LNF. Recently, the possibility to exploit bent crystals for the merging or the coalescence of particle beams in the transverse phase space has been proposed.<\/p><p>Another peculiar characteristic of channeling in crystals is the higher intense electromagnetic radiation generated by electrons and positrons if compared with Bremsstrahlung in amorphous media. In the last decades, the possibility to use a periodically bent crystal as a Crystalline Undulator has been explored. A sine-wave periodic potential can force particles along nearly sinusoidal trajectories and make them to radiate hard-X and gamma rays with wavelengths orders of magnitudes less than 1 Angstrom, i.e. within the range that cannot be reached by existing magnetic undulators. Such light sources will have many applications in the basic sciences including nuclear and solid-state physics and life sciences.<\/p><p>The intense Channeling Radiation is also proposed to increase the positron production rate for an intense positron source for future lepton colliders, such as FCC-ee, ILC, CLIC or a positron driven Muon Collider. The seminar will review the two programs to illustrate this considerable expansion of the infrastructure for accelerators and associated technology.<\/p><p><strong>Dr. Massimo Ferrario\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0EuAPS -EuPRAXIA Advanced Photon Sources<\/strong><\/p><p>Advanced Photon Sources are key components for the successful operation of the EuPRAXIA facilities. They act, for example, as drivers for plasma waves in ultra-high-gradient accelerators or as plasma-based sources of ultra-short pulses of high intensity x-rays. The EuAPS proposal (submitted by INFN, CNR and University of Tor Vergata) includes a laser-driven \u201cbetatron\u201d X Ray facility to be tested and put in operation at the LNF SPARC_LAB test facility. Research in the field of Fundamental Physics will be accomplished thanks to the availability of radioactive ion beams to be produced with the ISOL method, while research in the field of Interdisciplinary Physics will be based on the production of radionuclides of medical interest and on the generation of neutron sources.<\/p><p>For these purposes an accelerator complex is under development, consisting of several accelerator components.<\/p><p>The Cyclotron B70 is the primary accelerator, able to produce proton beams with energy of 35-70 MeV and maximum intensity of 0.75 mA. The primary beam is delivered on target systems of different types: an ISOL target ion source complex for production of radioactive ion beams, target stations for production of radionuclides of medical interest and generation of neutron sources. A High Resolution Mass Separator allows for high selectivity of radioactive ion beams. The ADIGE injector includes a Medium Resolution Mass Separator and a Charge Breeder to increase the charge state of radioactive ion beams. A normal conducting RFQ allows for pre-acceleration of radioactive ion beams. The update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPPU) recognized the unique opportunity of a muon collider as a path toward the high-energy, high-luminosity frontier beyond the expected reach, despite the challenges to produce bright muon beams and mitigate the drawbacks arising from the short muon lifetime at rest.<\/p><p>The new international collaboration for a Design Study based at CERN is focusing on a 3 TeV and a 10+ TeV center of mass energy collider options to evaluate the feasibility of the facility by the next ESPPU. This request is well aligned with the proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC) programme, which consists of a luminosity-frontier high-energy electron-positron collider (FCC-ee) followed by an energy-frontier hadron collider (FCC-hh).<br \/>A H2020 EU co-funded design study \u201cFCCIS\u201d, involving INFN Frascati and Roma will carry out the core work on the FCC-ee collider optimisation. Radiation therapy (RT) is one of the principal tools used for the treatment of cancer. The conventional radiotherapy, typically with X-rays, is delivered over several weeks in order to give the necessary dose for the cancer cure and limit at the best the damage to the healthy tissues caused by the ionization radiations. Radiotherapy with heavier charged particles, hadron therapy (HT), with protons and other ions species, like carbon, has also been developed and offers several advantages over the classical RT with X-rays as they deposit most of their energy at the end of their range and the particle beam can be shaped with great precision. Radio-Therapy with electrons have historically been used at low energy (low-energy electron LEE) to treat cancer but mostly for the treatment of superficial tumors given their very limited penetration depth.<\/p><p>The Flash therapy is a new promising technique where the necessary therapeutic dose is released in fraction of a second and the mean dose rate is much higher than the conventional irradiation. With this treatment the healthy tissues result to be partially preserved from the damage of the ionization radiation while the efficiency in the tumor cure remains unchanged, offering new opportunity to cancer treatment plans.<\/p><p>More recently, the idea of investigating the use of very high-energy (50-200 MeV) electron (VHEE) beams for RT has gained interest worldwide. The main advantages of VHEE beams over photons are related to the fact that small diameter VHEE beams can be scanned and focused easily, producing finer resolution for intensity modulated treatments than photon beams, and accelerators may be constructed at significantly lower cost compared to the current installations required for protons beams. In addition, VHEE beam can operate at very high dose rate compatible with the FLASH regime that can change dramatically the future scenario of the radiotherapy. Currently, the largest RF-driven accelerator is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, which accelerates protons to multi-TeV energies (1 TeV = 10E12 eV) in a 27-km high-vacuum ring. One of the main reasons for the enormous size of the accelerator is a limit on the acceleration field strength, which is about 1 MV\/cm. Due to this limit, to accelerate ions\/protons to multi-GeV or TeV energies, the acceleration path has to be very long, meaning that the accelerator has to be very large.<\/p><p>One potential alternative, or at least an important supplement to the RF-driven ion accelerators, seems to be ion accelerators driven by an intense laser beam.<\/p><p>The accelerator consists of a short-pulse high-intensity laser and a target, e.g. thin foil, placed in a vacuum chamber. The laser beam interacting with the target produces plasma, in which electrons are partly separated from ions by the action of the laser field. Between the layer of electrons and the ions, a very strong electric field is produced. This field pulls the ions, which follow the moving electron layer. The field strength can reach extremely high values (up to tens or even hundreds GeV\/cm) and, as a result, the ions can be accelerated to high energies over sub-mm distances, by many orders of magnitude shorter than required in conventional RF-driven accelerators. In this way, the laser-driven accelerator can potentially be much smaller and less complex than conventional ones. Furthermore, since the laser accelerated ion bunch is very dense and compact, the ion beam intensities\/powers can be very high, and the time duration of the ion pulse can be very short. They also find application in the post-acceleration of radioactive beams, allowed by the so-called charge breeders employed in ISOL facilities like SPES at INFN-LNL, or for fundamental studies about nuclear decays in stellar like conditions, as expected in the PANDORA project. The common denominator of most of the abovementioned facilities is the employment of ECR ion sources, producing multiple ionizations in magnetically confined plasmas. INFN has been playing a leading role in the development and modelling of such devices for many years, proposing innovative experimental approaches to boost their performances and obtaining an unprecedented detailed numerical description of the physical processes underlying their operations. Advanced X-ray FELs are capable to achieve brilliances that outrun any other particle beam.\u00a0Therefore the marriage between X-ray FELs and Energy Recovery Linacs (ERL) carries a potential to attain luminosity levels, in an electron-photon\u00a0collider, that exceed 10<sup>40<\/sup>\u00a0cm<sup>-2<\/sup>\u00a0s<sup>-1<\/sup>. We studied this new paradigm for muon beam generation, named EXMP (Electrons and X-rays to Muon Pairs),\u00a0which shows potentials of performances compatible with the requests of muon colliders. In particular, since the primary collision (e-h\u03bd) occurs in\u00a0vacuum, extremely high phase space densities can be achieved, with extremely small normalised emittances of the muon beam, down in the nm<sup>.<\/sup>rad\u00a0range, with average fluxes up to 10<sup>11<\/sup>\u00a0muon pairs per second.
