Given that\u00a0most of the charged-particle\u2019s energy is released in a localized\u00a0region, characterized by the Bragg peak, the dose delivered to the\u00a0surrounding healthy tissues is minimized. Nevertheless, secondary\u00a0particles produced by nuclear interactions between the beam and\u00a0patient tissues can pose an additional hazard that has to be carefully\u00a0taken into account in clinical treatment plans. The first main goal of\u00a0the FOOT (FragmentatiOn Of Target) experiment is to provide cross\u00a0section measurements of the all produced nuclear fragments necessary\u00a0to evaluate the deposited dose for a precise estimation of the risk\u00a0associated to the treatment.<br \/><br \/>Current space programs focus on exploration of the Solar system in\u00a0particular planning the first human mission on Mars. The main problem\u00a0is to evaluate the exposure to galactic cosmic rays in order to design\u00a0a suitable shielding to protect the astronauts. The FOOT experiment\u00a0will measure differential fragmentation cross sections of high-energy\u00a0light ions in different shielding materials.<\/p><p>The FOOT experiment is designed as a portable detector that can be\u00a0transported to various facilities around the world for collecting\u00a0experimental data with different beam conditions. The detector is\u00a0designed to possess good particle identification capabilities for\u00a0heavy fragments by measuring their trajectory, momentum, energy and\u00a0time of flight.
