{"id":31,"date":"2017-02-21T16:09:35","date_gmt":"2017-02-21T15:09:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/cygnus\/?page_id=31"},"modified":"2017-04-09T16:25:27","modified_gmt":"2017-04-09T15:25:27","slug":"dcant","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/cygnus\/dcant\/","title":{"rendered":"DCaNT"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">Directional WIMP detection with carbon nanotubes<\/h5>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Large arrays of aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs), open at one end, could be used as target material for the directional detection of weakly interacting dark matter particles (WIMPs).<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-69 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/cygnus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/PastedGraphic-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"948\" height=\"671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/cygnus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/PastedGraphic-1.png 948w, https:\/\/web.infn.it\/cygnus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/PastedGraphic-1-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/web.infn.it\/cygnus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/PastedGraphic-1-768x544.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 948px) 100vw, 948px\" \/><br class=\"\" \/>As a result of a WIMP elastic scattering on a CNT, a carbon ion might be injected in the body of the array and \u00a0propagate through multiple collisions within the lattice.<br class=\"\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/web.infn.it\/cygnus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-21-at-16.07.14-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"211\" \/>The ion may eventually emerge from the surface with open end CNTs, provided that its longitudinal momentum is large enough to compensate energy losses and its transverse\u00a0<br class=\"\" \/>momentum approaches the channeling conditions in a single CNT. A proper choice of \u00a0the angle formed between the WIMP wind apparent orientation and the direction of parallel CNTs would therefore provide the capability to identify this WIMP wind direction. The results of \u00a0calculations and simulations for an array of aligned CNT and derive \u00a0some constraints on the CNT target efficiency have been reported here [1,2]. \u00a0<b class=\"\">The DCaNT project that is aiming to experimentally demonstrate and measure the actual CNT target efficiency to channel ions. <\/b>The sensitivity for an ideal detector in a region of low mass WIMPs (about \u00a011 GeV) are \u00a0estimated.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/find\/physics\/1\/au:+Capparelli_L\/0\/1\/0\/all\/0\/1\">L.M.
