QUANTUM SPACETIME & QUANTUM INFORMATION

GEOSYM QFT Iniziativa Specifica INFN Sezione di Napoli

Alexander Calder, “The snake” 1961, paint on paper applied on canvas. Private Collection. A picture of spacetime beyond the Planck scale?

Knowledge has many frontiers, one of the most important in physics is the quantization of gravity. Einstein has changed our vision of space and time, the founding fathers of quantum mechanics changed the way we think about motion,  enlarging the notion of particle, position, measurement, and introducing the uncertainties of a world governed by the laws of probability. The dynamical variable of general relativity is spacetime itself, and its quantization will give rise to a quantum spacetime, where the fundamental variables will not commute, some sort of noncommutative geometry. The actors of this space will relate among themselves in a quantum way.

our group

Our group has worked for many years in the various aspects of quantum spaces, starting from noncommutative geometry, a generalization of spacetime described by noncommuting variables, like the quantum phase space of Heisenberg and Dirac. The quantum paradigm affects the way information is defined and transmitted, reaching to quantum information, and quantum computing.
