LUCID is a detector performed to monitor the interaction collision rate (luminosity) and is the only detector in ATLAS specifically dedicated to this item. Activities carried out up to the end of 2006 finally leaded to the detector final-design approval by the ATLAS collaboration in February 2007. The apparatus was put in place in July of 2008 and in September of the same year took data during the LHC inauguration day.

It consists of two arrays of 20 aluminium tubes - filled with a Cherenkov radiator gas - placed on each side of the beam interaction point at about 17 meters. The Cherenkov light is collected by photomultiplyers either directly coupled to the tubes or linked via optical fibres. LUCID will be able to monitor the collision-by-collision luminosity by detecting and counting the number of charged particles coming from the impact point.
