KM3NeT – Napoli

Opens a new window to our Universe…

The INFN-Napoli group, together with the University of Napoli Federico II (UniNa), has participated in the work of the KM3NeT Collaboration since its inception in 2008. Initially, dealing with 3″ photomultipliers (PMTs), contributing with innovative methods and instrumentation that led to the development of a new model, with improved performance, currently in use in submarine detection units. This was followed by the establishment of a laboratory for the integration and characterisation of optical modules (DOMs), and other laboratories for the integration and characterisation of base modules (BMs) and detection units (DUs).

The quantum leap, however, came in 2018 with the enrichment of laboratory instrumentation and recruit of research staff. In this context, a collaboration began with the Department of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli” (UniCampania), thanks to which the CAPACITY laboratory was conceived and built. This facility is the only one in the KM3NeT Collaboration where activities range from PMT to DU characterisation and integration.

The group is also very active in the phenomenology of astrophysical phenomena and data analysis.
