Giovanni Volpini (1963-2016)

VOLPINIIt is with great sadness that we inform you that Giovanni Volpini of INFN –Milano, LASA laboratory, suddenly died yesterday, following the illness that hit him during summer.

Giovanni started his career in Milano University as HEP Physics, in the UA2 experiments with L. Mandelli, L. Perini and F. Gianotti. Then he joined the LASA group of superconductivity with E. Acerbi and L. Rossi, with a PhD on transition effects of NbTi filaments. Then his career was devoted to large scale superconductivity projects like the  ATLAS superconducting Toroid and FAIR-GSI SIS300 dipole prototype. He has been member of the HiLumi LHC Design Study collaboration since the beginning and also member of the Collaboration Board. He was also member of FP7-EuCARD2 collaboration. He spent last three year at CERN in the TE-MSC group, for the collaboration CERN-INFN on HiLumi. He led the team that very recently manufactured and tested the first superferric Corrector  Magnet for the HL-LHC.

Giovanni was shy and extremely rigorous in his professional and personal life, but also very attentive to his collaborators.
