HEPscape!
The INFN escape room
about particle physics.
A team mission set at CERN: solve puzzles about the LHC accelerator and interpret the traces particles leave in detectors.

How to play
HEPscape!
A breakdown interrupts the virtual visit to CERN. To restart the accelerator, the team must use the scientific information hidden in the clues.
The visit to CERN
The virtual descent underground uses footage filmed in a CERN access shaft. Three screens and lighting create the setting for the mission.
The physics puzzles
Magnetic fields, superconducting materials and quarks are central to the challenges. Participants share clues and combine partial solutions.
LHC collisions
In the final challenge, participants examine simplified representations of real collisions, looking for traces consistent with a Higgs boson candidate event.
Planning
your visit
Duration, group size, scenarios and requirements for hosting the activity.
Please confirm the details of each event and the scenario offered with the local organisers.
Talk to the teamWhich scenario is right for my group?
There are two scenarios: one for children and one for adults. The story and setting are the same; the puzzle difficulty, scientific depth and support from facilitators are adapted to the audience.
How long does it take, and how many people can play?
A session lasts about 40 minutes and can accommodate up to 25 people. For a class or public event, please also agree on arrival times and the session schedule.
How can I take part?
Visit the Events and activities page or contact the team to find out about available events and how to book.
Can I host HEPscape! at my school?
The portable kit needs about 25–36 m² and can be set up indoors or outdoors. Space, equipment, facilitator availability and dates should be agreed with the team.
Languages and accessibility
Materials are available in Italian, English and French. An activity with Italian Sign Language (LIS) interpreters has also been piloted. Contact the team to agree on the language and check accessibility arrangements for each event.
Host HEPscape! at your school or event
Tell us the location, dates, available space and expected audience. The team will check kit availability and help plan the sessions.
An INFN public engagement project. Developed at INFN’s Rome division with support from the institute’s Third Mission Committee, HEPscape! brings high-energy physics to the public through play.
