Theses

A thesis with us is the perfect way to join our group and experience what a research activity in nuclear physics is. We are always glad to offer bachelor's, master's and PhD theses. Based on our most recent projects (see Research), the activities are tailored to the student's will and our needs. The student will generally perform data analysis and/or development of detectors and related software/electronics, working in a diverse and international environment. For master's and PhDs, often the student will have the chance to experience the entire project and be in charge of it, from the data taking (sometimes even from the detector development), to the data analysis, to the final publication. The student will acquire hard and soft skills that can be easily spent outside the academic world. For master's and PhD students, INFN funds travel expenses (meals, accommodations, travel) to participate in our experiments, and to attend workshops and conferences worldwide.

Bachelor's Theses at ISOLDE, CERN

The University of Florence has an agreement with CERN for activities at the bachelor's degree level. INFN funds travel expenses (meals, accommodations, travel) for the participating student. Within our group, it is possible to perform bachelor's theses at the ISOLDE facility of the CERN laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland. ISOLDE is the reference centre for radioactive ion beam production and acceleration in Europe, and hosts several experiments. Former students worked at the Miniball and WIZARD experiments.

Bachelor's and Master's Theses at International Labs with INFN

Each year, INFN launches a national call for undergraduate and master's students to carry out thesis projects at international nuclear physics laboratories. The fellowship covers all travel expenses, including accommodation and meals. Within our group, students can apply to spend a research period in Italy at the INFN national laboratories, or abroad at facilities such as ANL (USA), FRIB (USA), or GANIL (France), working on experimental or theoretical topics related to nuclear structure, reactions, and applications. These opportunities are part of INFN’s broader activities in the field of nuclear physics, coordinated by its dedicated scientific commission.

  • Test of the silicon detectors of the FAZIA detector at the INFN-LABEC accelerator in Florence, which is currently used together with the INDRA detector at the GANIL Laboratories.
