[178] αὐτὰρ ἐπεὶ δὴ σῆμα κακὸν παρεδέξατο γαμβροῦ, E, quando ebbe avuto il segno funesto del genero, [179] πρῶτον μέν ῥα Χίμαιραν ἀμαιμακέτην ἐκέλευσε per prima cosa volle che la Chimera invincibile [180] πεφνέμεν· ἣ δ' ἄρ' ἔην θεῖον γένος οὐδ' ἀνθρώπων, uccidesse; questa era stirpe divina, non d’uomini, [181] πρόσθε λέων, ὄπιθεν δὲ δράκων, μέσση δὲ χίμαιρα, leone davanti, dietro serpente, capra nel mezzo, [182] δεινὸν ἀποπνείουσα πυρὸς μένος αἰθομένοιο, soffiava un fiato terribile di fiamma avvampante. [183] καὶ τὴν μὲν κατέπεφνε θεῶν τεράεσσι πιθήσας. Ed egli la uccise, fidando nei segni dei numi.

But when he had received from him the evil token of his daughter's husband, first he bade him slay the raging Chimera. [180] She was of divine stock, not of men, in the fore part a lion, in the hinder a serpent, and in the midst a goat, breathing forth in terrible wise the might of blazing fire. And Bellerophon slew her, trusting in the signs of the gods.
