Laboratory Tours

A tour of INFN Milano LASA will be organized just after the Tutorials in the morning of Sunday 27th June, while the tour of INFN-LNL will be held on the last day of the Conference, July 2.

📅 Sunday, June 27 — after the Tutorials

LASA, located in Segrate at the outskirts of Milan, is an internationally recognized center of excellence in particle accelerator technology. For more than thirty years, it has been dedicated to the study and application of advanced superconductivity, both for accelerator systems and for other areas of physics, as well as to the development of innovative accelerator schemes.

Since the early 1990s, LASA has carried out activities in several fields of accelerator physics and cryogenics, applied to both superconducting magnets and RF cavities. These long-standing efforts have led to the development of unique expertise, enabling INFN to participate in the largest international particle physics projects.

In the field of superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) technology, LASA was a founding member of the TESLA collaboration supplying cryomodules, cavities and 3rd harmonic system for TTF/FLASH and European XFEL. From this experience, INFN contributed in-kind to major international projects, such as ESS and more recently PIP-II.

The visit will focus on the SRF test facility developed at LASA, together with its associated ancillary infrastructure.

LNL

LNL is one of the four national laboratories of INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare) and is located just 20 minutes by bus from the SRF 2027 venue. It houses five hadron accelerators, delivering beams to first-class experimental instruments, available to users from all over Europe and beyond.

SRF activities at INFN-LNL began in the late 1980s with the design and construction of ALPI, the world’s first heavy-ion linac based on thin-film SRF technology, which has now been in operation for over 30 years since first beam. Today INFN-LNL is recognized as an international reference center for the development of thin-film SRF cavities and innovative surface treatments.

The construction of the research facility SPES, generating exotic species and beams for fundamental science and medical applications, is in an advanced construction stage: it will expand the LNL +50 years’ experience in designing and operating accelerators, exploring the very mechanism of nuclear matter origin in stars. The SPES driver is a recently commissioned proton cyclotron, which will also produce radioisotopes for medicine.

The experience gained through the construction of ALPI and SPES has enabled INFN-LNL to contribute to major international projects, such as the construction of European Spallation Source, IFMIF-EVEDA and IFMIF-DONES.

We will be pleased to host SRF 2027 participants for a guided tour of the major scientific facilities of the site. The tour will include the heavy ion superconducting linacs, the cyclotron and the radioactive ion beam production and selection systems, the main detectors for nuclear physics with stable and exotic beams and the SRF R&D and test facilities.
