Method for detecting and locating structures using muon absorption radiography

The technology pertains to a muon radiography method suitable for detecting underground structures or cavities, or more generally, objects made of a specific material dispersed in a large quantity of another material with different properties. This method also measures the size of an object/material and its distances from an observation point.

How does it work?

The invention relates to a muon radiography method for detecting the presence of structures characterized by a specific density, located within a large quantity of materials or media having a significantly different average density. Such structures may consist of solid objects or cavities.

The method also allows for determining the dimensions and distance of the aforementioned structures relative to an observation point, as well as reconstructing their image, exploiting the density differences with the surrounding environment.

Applications

  • Volcanology;
  • Archaeology;
  • Geophysics.

Advantages

  • Estimate dimensions using a set of muon tracks;
  • Estimate distances from the observation point through a single measurement;
  • High accuracy in measurements;
  • High resolution.
