SRPC – Surface Resistive Plate Counter

The Surface Resistive Plate Counter (SRPC) is a gas detector with high timing resolution and made of electrodes with adjustable surface resistivity, for use under conditions of high radiation fluxes.

How does it work?

The technology proposes newly developed Resistive Plate Counter (RPC) detectors. The innovation of SRPCs lies in the electrodes, which are made with industrial techniques for depositing very thin Diamond-Like-Carbon films on flexible or rigid substrates, have high mechanical strength and chemical resistance, and show an easily modulated surface resistivity. The latter characteristic, together with the implementation of special current evacuation schemes, allows the construction of detectors operating at very high radiation fluxes while maintaining characteristics of fast time response, radiation robustness and simple construction.

Possible applications

  • High-energy physics experiments
  • Calorimetry
  • Medical diagnostics (e.g. PET)
  • Homeland security (e.g. port and airport monitor portals)

Advantages

  • Change in resistivity in a simple way
  • It works in environments with high radiation fluxes
  • Fast time response
  • Easy to make
  • Low construction cost
