  • Timeline: 08/01/2025 – 12/31/2026

The Project

The Open.INFN 2 project represents the strategic prosecution of INFN.Open, and is its full operational actuation. Its aim is the structured and lasting qualification of INFN’s capabilities to exploit its scientific and technological results, coming from fundamental research, and to strengthen their impact on the Industrial system oand on the knowledge economy.

Building on the evidence from the first phase, Open.INFN 2 implements systemic interventions to consolidate INFN’s role in Italy’s transition toward a high-innovation-intensity economy. Specifically, the Institute aims to:

  • Increase the efficiency and quality of technology transfer mechanisms between INFN and the production system.
  • Facilitate the market introduction of new products and services with high technological content arising from INFN research.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of innovation in strategic national sectors, fostering synergy between research infrastructures and emerging industrial supply chains.

At the end of the project, INFN will have a solid organizational and digital infrastructure capable of promptly identifying and valorizing the results of fundamental research, including from a cross-sectoral perspective. It will be able to engage systematically with the business world, promoting virtuous pathways of shared innovation.

Objectives

The project aims to transform INFN’s technological heritage into value for society and industry, pursuing the following objectives:

  • Permanently structure the process of valorizing fundamental research through the stable activation of an organizational, managerial, and operational model that enables the identification, protection, promotion, and transfer of scientific and technological results to the production system;
  • Strengthen INFN’s capacity to interact effectively and continuously with the production world, particularly with SMEs and deep tech companies, for the co-creation of solutions with high scientific and technological content.

Expected results

INFN.OPEN 2 intends to achieve the following results:

  • Development and release of an integrated digital platform for intellectual property management;
  • Awareness-raising and training of the network of INFN representatives for research valorization;
  • Promotion of new collaborative initiatives between INFN researchers and external companies.

  • Timeline: 23/11/2021 – 31/08/2025

The Project

The INFN.Open project – Open INnovation from Fundamental Nuclear research – aims to strengthen INFN’s technical and organisational capacities and competences to enhance the scientific and technological knowledge developed by the body itself in carrying out research experiments in fundamental physics.

Through the project, the Institute intends to effectively promote the valorisation processes, in order to contribute to the technological and industrial innovation of the country system.

Specifically, the project aims to:

      1. optimize the management of the technology transfer pathways to the system of the companies;
      2. strengthen INFN’s capacity to qualify as a driver of the national system of innovation and technological development.

Objectives

INFN.Open will build the basis for knowledge transfer to become a shared practice by the entire Institute community, thus making the developed technological solutions available to the business world. The project intends to:

  • provide the Institute with an effective system for scouting and managing technological development initiatives aimed at the go-to-market;
  • develop a permanent Intellectual Property Management (IPM) system functional to the technological development initiatives undertaken;
  • support the organizational modernization of the Institute in terms of technology transfer;
  • launch a Social Impact Innovation pathway to support the implementation and management of the Institute’s research and technology transfer actions.

Expected results

INFN.Open intends to achieve the following results:

  • Creation of a structured model for the identification of initiatives of industrial interest and collaboration models with industrial partners;
  • Activation of an internal Knowledge Exploitation Unit (KEU);
  • Definition of tools to support the scouting of industrial initiatives;
  • Creation of training and awareness-raising paths for internal staff on the exploitation of the industrial potential of the research activities carried out;
  • Definition of a structured model built on INFN’s peculiarities for sharing public intellectual property with the private sector;
  • Definition of a set of indicators for monitoring Social Impact Innovation.
