Anti-wear coatings on rolls for industrial processes

High-thickness multilayer coatings (greater than 10 µm) protect the roll from wear, increasing its operating life. The use of layers of different materials makes it possible to increase the mechanical resistance of the coating and its adhesion to the roll, increasing the protective effect.

How does it work?

The process is applied to rolls for industrial machining, such as hot and/or cold metal rolling, and consists in depositing successive layers of hard materials using PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) or PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Vapour Deposition) techniques.

The coating produced has thicknesses ranging from 10µm to 150µm, high adhesion to the roll, low coefficient of friction and high hardness, which characteristics prevent it from delaminating and fracturing. In this way, the roll is protected against wear and tear and its service life is significantly increased.

Applications

  • Hot and/or cold rolling rolls;
  • Plastic deformation of metals;
  • Continuous processing.

Advantages

  • Wear protection allows extending the service life of the roll;
  • The coating decreases friction between the roll and the workpiece, increasing machining speed;
  • The high hardness of the coating prevents deformation, improving the quality of the machined surface;
  • End-of-life rolls can be reprocessed and reused.
