Innovative geometry plasma chamber for Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion sources. The system with an optimized geometry allows greater efficiency in the generation of ions and therefore the possibility of creating higher-performing ion sources, since, by breaking the cylindrical symmetry typical of these devices, it is indeed possible to excite new electromagnetic field configurations.
Chambers with such a complex shape can only be made with additive manufacturing techniques.
Advantages of such an ion source include:
- better coupling between plasma and electromagnetic field;
- increased brightness of the ion beam;
- optimization of plasma confinement;
- possibility of selective ion heating;
- reduction of destructive effects in ECR plasmas, such as kinetic turbulences.
