Multi-layer anode for X-ray production in radiotherapy

The invention concerns an innovative configuration of an anode for producing X-radiation in charged particle (electron) accelerators for the purpose of radiotherapy treatments. In particular, the invention is aimed at carrying out treatments using high charge/photon fluxes produced for external beam treatments in Flash regime.

How does it work?

In conventional Linacs, the electron beam strikes a metal anode generating X-rays by bremsstrahlung, with doses of a few Gy/min. For flash radiotherapy, it is necessary to increase the current, causing overheating that damages the anode.

The invention proposes a multi-layer “sandwich” anode that allows high charge/photon fluxes to be used.

Applications

  • Linear accelerators or on electronic beam lines for x-ray production.

Advantages

  • Current limits of technology;
  • Traditional anode structure;
  • Dose delivery speed;
  • Advanced multi-layer structure.
