An innovative method that makes it possible to optimize intraoperative radiotherapy treatments (IORT). This is a particular radiotherapy technique used during surgery, immediately after the removal of the tumour mass.

The intraoperative radiotherapy technique selectively targets the tumour mass, sparing healthy tissue. Unfortunately, the spread of this type of radiotherapy is hampered by the difficulty of implementing radiotherapy treatment plans that take into account the anatomical changes of the patient, due to the tumour removal surgery .
The patent develops a method that manages to optimize the parameters to be set. The result is a more effective and efficient treatment, based on the patient’s new anatomical conformation.
During the surgical procedure, once the tumour has been removed, a three-dimensional scan of the treated area is carried out, which is used to correct the anatomical image acquired before the surgical procedure. With it, the preoperative anatomical image can be corrected. The image obtained helps to correctly set up the radiotherapy treatment.
