Detector for measuring a beam of ionizing radiation

The patented technology pertains to detection systems for monitoring and controlling the radiation dose delivered to the patient during intraoperative electron radiation therapy (IOERT).

How does it work?

The IOERT technique involves irradiation with electrons immediately after tumor removal, in an open surgical field, to eliminate any residual cells. It uses a compact accelerator that emits short and intense pulses, with the total dose administered in a single session. Therefore, real-time dose control and precise alignment of the shielding disc are crucial.

The patented detector uses plastic scintillating plates arranged in a two-dimensional manner, each connected to an optical fiber that carries the light to a photodetector. This system allows for the integration of radiation on each plate and reading signals with few channels, ensuring fast measurements with high temporal resolution, ideal when detailed spatial reconstruction is not required.
