DOIN

Wearable Neutron DOsimeter

Direct reading personal dosimeter (APD) for neutrons, with improved energy and angle response compared to models currently on the market. Personal dosimetric surveillance in the neutron field in the nuclear, civil, research and medical fields must handle three problems:

    • neutrons are always present in the field at all energies, from thermals (fractions of eV) to tens or hundreds of MeV;
    • there is no sensor whose response extends over these 10 or more orders of magnitude in energy;
    • the energy response of the existing sensors is never proportional, as the neutron energy varies, to the dose equivalent magnitude imposed by the ICRP (International Commission on Radiological Protection).

Because of this, personal dosimeters on the market perform poorly and do not meet the criteria provided by IEC standards. DOIN, instead, employs more than one sensor in a moderating/absorbing matrix; the readings are combined to provide a personal dose equivalent indication which, from “bench” tests, falls within the IEC criteria, thus overcoming the difficulties that at present strongly limit this market sector.

In its latest evolution (DOIN_LM), the dosimeter has been further compacted and a gamma ray sensor has been added.
