Detector equipped with a high timing accuracy system for the discrimination of charged particles. The innovative geometric configuration of the various components enables signal detection within a few tens of picoseconds of the particle’s passage. This is made possible by inserting protection rings which are arranged so as to prevent the delayed charges from reaching the signal amplification zone, making their contribution to the total signal negligible.

One of the problems that afflicts particle detectors in general, and especially Ultra-Fast (UFSD) silicon detectors, is the inability to detect particles that generate delayed signals in relation to the instant of passage through the detector, causing an error of approximately 100-200 ps in the measurement of the crossing time. This drawback can be overcome by adopting an innovative configuration for the various detector components that allows only point signals to be significantly amplified. This is made possible by inserting a protection ring that prevents delayed charges from reaching the amplification layer, so that their contribution to the total released charge can be neglected, thus minimising detection errors.
