The "Claudio Villi" Prize for the best doctoral thesis in nuclear physics discussed in the period from 1 June 2018 to 31 May 2019 was awarded to Dr. Lucia Anna Damone, author of the thesis entitled "7Be(n,p)7Li cross section measurement for the Cosmological Lithium Problem at the n_TOF facility at CERN", who conducted his studies at the Physics Department "M. Merlin" and the INFN section of Bari. The awarding ceremony was held online, during the meeting of the National Scientific Commission III on 21 April 2020, chaired by Dr. R. Nania and in the presence of the members of the Executive Board of the INFN Dr. D. Bettoni and Dr. E. Nappi. With the Villi prize, the INFN recalls the figure of Claudio Villi (1922-1996), an illustrious physicist who held the first Italian chair of Nuclear Physics in Padua in 1961. Villi was responsible for the idea of creating the Legnaro National Laboratories and the current organizational model of the Institute, which took shape during the years in which he was president of the INFN (1970-75).
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced the selection of Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY, as the site for a planned major new nuclear physics research facility.
The Electron Ion Collider (EIC), to be designed and constructed over ten years at an estimated cost between $1.6 and $2.6 billion, will smash electrons into protons and heavier atomic nuclei in an effort to penetrate the mysteries of the “strong force” that binds the atomic nucleus together.
