INTRAOPERATIVE PROBE
Medical Physics | Intraoperative Probe | Beta Tracers | Bremmstrahlung | RadionuclidesINTRODUCTION
The intraoperative probe is able to localize of tumor residues labeled with beta emitting radioactive drugs. Through an easier identification of any residues, the use of this device contributes to the achievement of most promising results for the removal of cancer residues.
TECHNICAL FEATURES
Beta-emitted radionuclides release their energy into biological tissues around 2-10 mm. This feature of low penetration (short range), allows the identification of tumor residues only in the immediate vicinity of the tumors themselves. For the identification of any residuals at a greater distance, it is also of interest to reveal the secondary bremsstrahlung radiation, emitted by the beta particles, which is able to penetrate several centimeters even if it is not very intense and it is usable for a longer distance detection. The intraoperative probe, subject of this patent, detects radioactive drugs with beta emission radionuclides in the tissues and consists of two selective sensors: one based on the bremsstrahlung radiation (X-rays, 10-100 Kev), for the spatial identification of the centimeter order, the other for the subsequent punctual identification, sensitive to primary radiation (beta).
POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS
- Radiotherapy;
- Detection of small and medium tumoral lesions;
- Detection of hidden beta or gamma sources.
ADVANTAGES
- Working with approved radiopharmaceuticals;
- Handling probe;
- Possibility of integration in laparoscopic/robotic surgery systems;
- Use of commercial sensors;
- Possibilty of beta radiation identification inside a tissue in a distance of centimeters order.
