SINTERING FOR COMPOSITE MATERIALS

Sintering | Aluminium Fluoride | Ceramic Materials | Metal junction

INTRODUCTION

The invention is a method for making massive moderators of aluminum fluoride containing lithium with a high relative density. The method is based on sintering and guarantees to realize relatively large elements, in a short time and with an energy efficient process, thanks to the characteristics of the machine and the molds.

TECHNICAL FEATURES

The process can create products with a relative density greater than 80% by sintering powders. An experimental device and an optimized sintering procedure have been developed: densification is obtained at high temperature, in the presence of uniaxial pressure and carried out in times sufficiently short to avoid significant material losses caused by the vaporization of the materials. Compared to commercial sintering machines, the proposed set-up is more compact, economical and energy efficient. In addition, the molds are engineered so as to obtain a uniform temperature distribution in the sample, maximizing the yield and speed of the process, and allowing the densification of samples up to 15 cm per side.
